REVIEW:  We enjoyed an outstanding pre-season meet against Edisonthis past week.  Edisonis one of the strongest teams in the Sunset League and they certainly competed well against us.  It is hard to predict which team would have won if this was a scoring meet.  Results are posted on our web page (www.gvarvas.com)

Our athletes responded and competed well under pressure and we recorded some excellent marks.  In addition, we improved to new season bests in the 300 IH, the long jump, triple jump, discus and high jump for our boy’s team.  These are some of the events we need to continue to improve and strengthen in order to give our boys the opportunity to repeat as league champions.  Additionally, we registered very good marks in many of the girls’ events (Kyndol Craver flashed her form from last year, Hannah O’Connor jumped 5’0”, Madeline Bradford ran a PR 800, Molly Babcock and Coco Evans won exciting races) as well as in  the distance events for the boys.

This meet brought to a close the pre-season for our team.  We have worked hard as a team and this hard work has helped us made progress in many areas of our team on both the boys’ and the girls’ side.  We feel we are pretty ready for the league competition that will start this week.  We hope that the coaches’ optimistic talk about our talents will serve to build more confidence in us and inspire us to continue to work hard.  We want to become one of the best teams around.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEKHannah O.Connor (5’0” in the HJ) and Jeffrey Azuoku (20’ 6” in the LJ and over 41’ 10” in the TJ) are the field events athletes of the meet.  Jacob Suiste (two exciting come-from-behind victories in the 1600 and 800) and Madeline Bradford (2:21.8 PR in the 800) are the distance athletes of the meet.  Kyndol Craver (16.5 and 49.4 double in the hurdles) and Austin Rouk (impressive first-ever race in the 300IH) are the sprints/hurdles athletes of the meet

          Review
:  We enjoyed a most exciting, enjoyable and successful meets this past week.  On Thursday, we outscored Laguna Hills H. S. in all five divisions contested.  The boys varsity won by the score of 64-63 (the victory was sealed with a 1,2,3 finish in the 3200 and the victory in the 4x4 relay), while the girls varsity won 101 – 26;  JV girls won 79 – 57, the F/S boys won 72-64 and the JV boys won 60-42.  On Saturday (at the Irvine Invitational) we registered many impressive performances and picked up some nice hardware (including a 3rd place finish for the girls’ varsity in the 30+ team field).

I thought the setting for both meets could not have been better.  The weather was very good for both meets for the majority of the time the competition was amongst the best we will see all year, the enthusiasm was high (especially at the dual meet) and all of the athletes competed with heart and determination.  Our team demonstrated great support and enthusiasm for each other and our performances were impressive.

We enjoyed improvement in many of our events (jumps, relays, hurdles, sprints) and we keep adding some new talented athletes each week.  High school sports and especially H.S. track cannot get much better than this.  I hope all of you will have some special memories from this week besides the medals that were won.  The will to do your best for the team was obvious.  It is will such as this that helps young teams progress quickly to the top level of their sport.  Let’s keep this attitude and go-get-them attitude in all of our season.  You made us proud!

Among the high lights from the Invitational:  Molly Babcock’s victory in the 1600 (4:54.80 and the # 72 best time ever in CIF), Jeffrey Azoughu’s 41’4” in the Triple Jump, Jackson Marshall’s (9:50.8 and 4:35.6) and Jake Suiste’s (4:43.8 & 10:04.6) PR in the distance races, frosh Scott Patton’s sub 12 and 24.4 sprints (against the wind) in the 100 & 200, Gabe Warner’s (another frosh) over 19’ LJ, Brina Jablonski’s 60.2 (also 16’1” in the LJ) and Austin rouk’s 51.26 in the 400s, Jared Klopfers, 1
st place finish and a new PR in the 800, Madie Franklin’s (29’6”, 87”8”) and Morgan Johnson’s (33’7”) throws (both earned medals for heir efforts, Patrick Ingram regaining his pop in the throws (41’1”, 139’6”), Dragan Simmic (4:18.8) and Brandon Ferguson (4:19.8 & a Pr 9:24.1)) were the only athletes to break 4:20 from the same school and Hannah, Heising’s sub 16 and sub 49 hurdling,

Athletes of the meetMaddie Franklin for her throws (she is getting closer and closer to the 30-90 double) and Nick Sine in the TJ (just barely below the impressive 40’ level)are the field athletes of the week; Brina Jablonski and Michael Scarlett (both excellent 400s and relay legs for the team) are the sprint/hurdle athletes of the meet; Jared Klopfer (first place finish in the 800 with a PR) and Alyssa Cerminara-Gutcher (nice PR 1600 of 5:24.5) were the distance athletes

                          May 31, 2011 -- Wk 14 State Championships

REVIEW:  Congratulations to Gabrielle Scott, who qualified for the State Championships this weekend in Fresno in the 400 meters for the 3rd year in a row.  Her time of 53.98 was 3rd place at the Masters Meet, a new PR, school record, and also ranks her #3 in California and #9 nationally.  It is also 0.56 seconds away from the Orange County record of 53.42, set in 1978.  Thank you for all of the support atCerritos College and you can continue to monitor Gabrielle’s progress on our gowoodbridge.com website.  State Prelims take place this Friday and State Finals are on Saturday.

A special thank you to Mr. Crellin, Mrs. Kingsland, Mrs. Heising, and all of the other parents who have taken so many wonderful pictures for all of us to enjoy.  They say that a picture is worth 1000 words, but it might take more to capture and describe all of the memorable moments we had this season.  Recall running in the heat at University, to running in the rain at Corona del Mar, to the Varsity Boys 4x400 relay to win the Irvine meet by 1 point, a special track and field season can be so fleeting, yet rewarding if one figures out some meaning to it all, along with having the experience.
