Track and Field Competition Types

 1)  Dual Meets:  On Thursdays between one or two other teams.  Every single athlete in good standing competes in this meet.  It usually starts at 3:00pm (an approximate schedule is given on our web page) and ends at about 6:00 or so.  In this type of a meet, there are usually FIVE divisions that are contested (Varsity Boys, Varsity Girls, Frosh/Soph Boys, JV Girls, JV Boys).  Scores are kept separately for each of the divisions.  For dual meets, the scoring goes:  5 pts for FIRST, 3 points for SECOND, 1 pt for THIRD (for tri meets its 5, 3, 2, 1).  Relays are scored 5 points for FIRST and no points for second (5, 3 for tri meets).  It takes 68 points to tie in a dual meet and 68+ to win the dual meet.  Individual awards are rare in a dual meet.  WHS does hand out 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place customized ribbons in our home meets.

2)  Invitationals:  On Saturdays against many schools (20+).  Not everyone is accepted in these meets.  Usually the top two athletes and one relay in varsity and frosh-soph levels are accepted by the meet managers.  These meets last all day long (usually 9:00am to 6:00pm).  We normally put a tentative schedule on our web page.  These meets provide individual as well as team awards.  Scoring is based on 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis.  These meets allows us to compete against teams outside of our area and outside of our CIF division.  They are extremely valuable to the development of our athletes to the elite level.  It costs our team somewhere between $5 -$7 per event per individual (the team/school covers this expense).  Athletes that are entered in this meet will cover the entry fee if they do not participate (aside from the normal consequences for missing a meet).  Athletes that are not entered to these Invitational meets are encouraged to attend but are not required to do so.

3)  All-Comers Meets:  These are unofficial practice meets that enable our athletes to get in better shape and be better prepared for the season.  They are a must of the varsity athletes and are highly recommended for the developing athletes.  The athletes provide their own transportation and wear regular workout apparel.  They usually charge $5 at the gate of the stadiums for each participating athlete.
