Woobridge 13, Irvine 5:  The Woodbridge High boys tennis team bounced back from a tough loss to Mater Dei with a 13-5 win over Irvine in a non-league match last week (Wed, Mar 12th).

The Warriors won eight of nine sets in singles to roll to the victory.  Andre Halabi swept at #1 singles for the Warriors, 6-0, 6-0, 6-1, and Christopher Naamani won all three of his sets at #2 singles, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2.  Patrick Lipscomb won two of three sets.

In doubles, Woodbridge's team of Mikey Zablan and Bryan Garafelo won both sets it played.

A win over Laguna Beach on Thursday improved Woodbridge's record to 5-2 overall.  Both of the Warriors' losses this season so far have been to teams ranked high in Orange County.

Woodbridge lost to #2 Mater Dei, 12-6, earlier last week (Tue, Mar 11th).  "I thought it could have been even closer," Woodbridge coach Ric Barth said.  "There were a few close sets we didn't win and we only got two sets in doubles."

And both of Woodbridge's wins in doubles came from one team.  The #3 duo of Garafelo and Lipscomb picked up the two sets.

Woodbridge got a solid effort from Halabi at #1 singles.  Halabi won two of three sets, including beating Mater Dei's Chris Freeman, 6-3.  Zablan took one set at #2 singles, although he nearly had another.  Zablan lost to Charlie Alvarado, 7-5.  Alvarado swept for Mater Dei.

Woodbridge begins Sea View League play Tuesday (March 18th).
