41 - Number of hits by J.J. Altobelli this season, which ties the record set by the late Ryan Lemmon in 1993.
Woodbridge 1, Huntington Beach 8: Woodbridge High's baseball team tried to cap a disappointing season with a victory Thursday night. But the Warriors fell to Huntington Beach, 8-1, in a Sea View League game at Ryan Lemmon Stadium.
Woodbridge junior J.J. Altobelli did get into the school's record books, tying the mark of 41 hits in a season set by the late Ryan Lemmon, who set the record in 1993. "Ryan Lemmon was a pretty big name around here, so it's pretty cool to be in the same category as him," Altobelli said.
Woodbridge's only run came in the first inning. James Parr and Andrew Sharp singled and Parr came home on a single by Sam Michaels to help the Warriors tie the game, 1-1. But the Oilers broke the game open with four runs in the seventh inning off of Parr. Max Iskra pitched the first four innings before being relieved by Kevin Crofts in the fifth.
"We started to see things come back together after our spring break tournament," said fIrst-year Coach Tim Murray. "Sometimes, when you have a coaching change there are some things that happen when you change regimes. I think Coach (Bob) Flint had been such a steady person here and there were some things we wanted to do different."
One of the Warriors' victories was against Sea View League champion El Toro. "We got to hang our hat on the El Toro win, that was a big win for us," Murray said. "It showed us what we were capable of."
On Tuesday, the Warriors' topped Huntington Beach, 7-2. Freshman Ben Wylly was 3 for 4 and also notched his first victory on the mound for the Warriors. "Ben Wylly threw a complete game for us," Murray said. "We challenged him by bringing him up to varsity this year and he responded."
