8,700 run at 28th Woodbridge Cross Country Classic

Sophomore Girls race in the morning session of the 28th Woodbridge Cross Country ClassicWith the largest group of registered athletes in meet history, the 28th Woodbridge Cross Country Classic was a tremendous success Saturday at the Woodbridge High School course.

207 schools from across the nation were represented and over 8,700 runners finished the 3.0 mile cross country course, a sizeable increase over the record-setting total of 8,100 runners from last year.

Including out-of-state high school teams from Desert Vista (Phoenix, AZ), Foothill (Henderson, NV), Green Valley (Henderson, NV), Jefferson (Auburn, WA), and The Woodlands in Texas, the annual cross country invitational has become the largest single-day meet in the nation.

The featured rated and sweepstakes races, run under the lighted course, were the usual exciting conclusion to the evening meet session.  Woodbridge's own Shane Berglas finished second in the Boys Rated race with a 3.0-mile personal best of 15:04, making him the third best performer in school history.

In the Girls Sweepstakes race, Sarah Andrews, a junior at The Woodlands (TX), won the individual honor with a time of 16:17 (second fastest in meet history).  San Clemente's Alex Dunne finished second at 16:44.  Saugus High School won the team competition by annihilating the field with their top five runners all placing in the top 19 finishers.

In the Boys Sweepstakes race, Mac Fleet (University City High School, San Diego, CA) won with a time of 14:22 followed by Crescenta Valley's Zack Torres at 14:26.  Buchanan (Clovis) eked out the team title by beating Vista Murrieta by four points.
