IWN: Softball team starts season out at 3-2
By TIM BURT, Sports Editor
Woodbridge High's softball team has started out the season with a 3-2 record.
"I thought the team played really well and we're playing at a very high level," said Woodbridge Coach Alan Dugard. "Yucaipa and Riverside Christian (the two teams Woodbridge lost to) are both excellent teams."
The Warriors started the season by defeating Ramona, 6-0, in the Corona Tournament. The Warriors won the game, 6-0, behind the excellent pitching of freshman Danica Bishop, who pitched a two-hit shutout. "It was an excellent game by my freshman," Dugard said.
In the second game that day, the Warriors lost to Yucaipa, in 11 innings, in a game decided by the international tiebreaker. Bishop pitched the last five innings of that game and did not allow an earned run. She came on in relief of junior Heather Gorey, who pitched six shutout innings before having to come out because of a sprained ankle.
The Warriors then defeated Hemet, 6-5, as Bishop pitched another solid game to record the victory. Hannah Dowling had two hits and knocked in two runs that turned out to be the difference in the game.
Woodbridge.then defeated Moreno Valley, 2-1. Bishop pitched and the only run she allowed was unearned.
The Warriors then fell to Riverside Christian, 3-1. Jesika Johnson accounted for the Warriors only run with a home run.
