Lady Warriors lose heartbreaker against Timberwolves

Woodbridge 6, Northwood 9:  On Tuesday, May 10th, the Woodbridge Warriors Varsity Softball team traveled to the upper reaches of Irvine to face Northwood in a key Pacific Coast League match up.

The Timberwolves struck first in the bottom of the second inning by manufacturing one run.

With a potential CIF berth on the line, the Lady Warriors struck back with three runs of their own in the top of the third inning.  After two quick outs, Ryne Nakama turned the momentum around by stealing second base after reaching safely on a fielder’s choice. Katherine Henshall then moved Ryne to third with a single to left and Kayla Clausenworked a walk to load the bases for clean-up hitter Annie Dowling.  With a two and two count, Annie smashed a double to deep center field and cleared the bases of Warriors.

Aryn Guzman scored the fourth run of the game for the visiting Warriors in the top of the fourth inning after reaching on a fielder’s choice and eventually crossing the plate on an RBI groundout by Ryne Nakama.

With the score 4-1, Kayla Clausen got things going again in the top of the fifth inning with a lead off homerun to center field.  Annie Dowling followed with a single andDanica Bishop worked a walk.  After a quick out, Kyle Nakama loaded the bases by drawing the second walk of the inning from the rattled Northwood pitcher.  Aryn Guzman brought in the sixth run of the game with an RBI single up the middle.  Still with bases loaded, the Timberwolves were able to minimize the damage by getting the next two Warrior batters to strike out.

Trailing 6-1, the Northwood offense finally got things going in the bottom of the fifth inning.  After sending ten batters to the plate, the Timberwolves were able to score six runs and take a 7-6 lead.

Shell-shocked, the Lady Warriors never really threatened again.  Northwood brought two more runs across in the bottom of the sixth inning and completed the season sweep.  Game summary.
